Art Rock / Post-Punk newcomers Warren’s House have just announced themselves with a debut double release.
The lead single 'Lilac Type' really grabbed our attention. It is a song that has a split personality, a two-faced, Jekyll and Hyde esc double-act in sonic form. The first minute or so is characterised by deep, gritty guitar lines that hit hard when in full flow but then pull and scratch at the surface of the track with sharp textural off-shoots and harsh tones. The spoken-word vocals have a venom to them, ringing of Shame. Together this creates an enjoyably menacing soundscape.
However, the storm clouds then give way to a much more tranquil and spaced out atmosphere that is comparable to some of English Teacher’s tracks. The drums take centre stage, still providing a solid Art Rock groove to maintain an underlying excitement but the guitars become sparse, only landing with lucid strums and more considered, emotive notes. The vocals gain a more thoughtful nature too and bright acoustics enter the fray, bringing a more hopeful, natural light.
Yet the darkness wins over eventually as the open hi-hat brings an intensity to the drums and gravelly guitar textures re-enter, completely absorbing the brief calm. It is a wonderfully constructed track that shows far more technicality and maturity than your average debut! We can’t wait to hear more from these guys.
