Music serves many purposes: escapism, entertainment, relaxation, but relatability is arguably one of the most important usages. Through Larlin’s new track ‘Sondhiem’, they lyrically craft a beautiful and resonating tune that is direct and unafraid in confronting challenging emotions, which many listeners will align with. Fronted by Maryann Hoar, her dreamy vocals shine through the cozy chords that wrap you up in their indie softness, as the lyrics paint on a canvas of vulnerability.

Focusing on the aspect of disassociation, the idea of feeling numb is painfully illustrated yet the track has an honest, beating heart. Drawing to just vocals and the strum of an acoustic guitar, we receive the lyrics, “You don’t know it cos I guess I look alive / But I’ve been coasting, watching the years go by”. The simplicity of instrumentals here puts listeners in this position of directness; a wall is broken down and the lyrics seep through, impossible to ignore. Hoar’s songwriting is open, unashamed, and bold, the kind that is so important to music.
