EP REVIEW: Funeralcare - Marathon

Cormac O'Carroll

Funeralcare, an Electro-Indie group with a fresh energetic sound, have delivered an engaging debut EP in 'Marathon' that blends athletic themes with reflective lyrics. With its mix of upbeat tempos and introspective semantics, the EP showcases their potential to carve out a unique space in the Indie scene.

The group’s sound is anchored in the blurring of lines, blending melodic guitar with danceable rhythms. Their tracks are laced with layers of electronic textures that create a dreamy yet grounded vibe. From the get-go, 'Marathon' sets the tone, its upbeat energy carrying themes of pushing through emotional hurdles, mirroring the endurance of a long run. It’s a perfect opener for an EP that feels both introspective and forward moving.

Standout tracks like 'Icecap' and 'Never Good' highlight the group’s ability to craft catchy melodies while exploring conflicted emotional terrain. 'Icecap' stands out with its anthemic hooks and longing vocals, capturing the fragility of love and the pain of uncertain expectations. Meanwhile, 'Never Good' offers a darker edge, with a driving rhythm and lyrics that touch on self-doubt in the face of adversity. The penultimate track, 'Sugarcoat' articulates a sense of giving up in love, embodied by a catchy, upbeat rhythm which contrasts the song’s themes.

Lyrically, the EP’s themes revolve around the struggles of unrequited love and the uncertainty of romance, often comparing these emotions to the experience of running. Tracks like 'Semi-skimmed' echo this metaphor, with lines like “I can’t ask you what you came to the track for” and “can’t keep up like I did before” illustrating the exhaustion and disconnection felt in a one-sided or miscommunicated relationship.

In conclusion, Funeralcare's debut EP 'Marathon' leaves a strong impression. With their unique fusion of electronic and Indie elements, coupled with evocative lyrics, they’ve set a solid foundation for future releases. This is an EP that fans of all indie sleaze and electronica will want to revisit.
