If Wolf Alice wrote Trainspotting’s ‘Choose life’ speech, it would sound something like this. It’s hard to believe Lizzie Esau has only been releasing music since 2020, as she already has a bold, defined and unique sound, earning her over 34k monthly Spotify listeners. With a Skins-inspired music video accompanying the single, 'Day In The Life' is a hazy and upbeat 2000s hit.

Starting off like you’ve been plunged in the middle of a dream, 'Day In The Life' begins with Lizzie’s haunting, mystical vocals kept upbeat by a guitar riff running through the background. The song then picks up its pace as Lizzie asks again and again “I work eat sleep love / Is that good enough?”. The repetition transports us directly into the endless self-doubt most of us find ourselves daily plagued by, but the fast-paced beat keeps 'Day In The Life' from being too angsty.
The song progresses to a list of words occupying Lizzie’s mind played over a background of overlapping vocals, which comes to an end as all vocals fade out apart from Lizzie’s voice alluringly repeating this list. The clarity and vulnerability of the last section feel like a direct message to the listener, or could alternatively be played in the background of the last episode of a gritty 2000s British teen drama.
