LIVE REVIEW: Phoebe Green @ Night and Day Cafe, Manchester
On a warm Autumn night in Manchester, we saw the long awaited return of one of the city's brightest talents, Phoebe Green, all thanks to the work wonderful work of Independent Venue Week who have showcasing the #BestofBritish at shows across the country.
Known for her introspective and uniquely relatable lyricism and hypnotic electro-pop textures, Phoebe has long been at the forefront of Manchester's emerging scene. Her 2020 single 'Reinvent' became a huge hit throughout lockdown thanks to its infectious melody and thoughtful lyrics yet she has continued to develop her sound with every release. Now as she gears up for the release of her new album 'PREMATURE NOSTALGIA' she returned to the Manchester stage at The Night and Day Cafe to tease what's to come.
As soon as she opened the set you could sense that she is beginning a new era, a transitional era of reflection, self-awareness and a fresh sonic approach that has resulted in some of her most cinematic and immersive songs to date. This immersion has often been a back part of Phoebe's music. From her videos and fashion to creating handmade merch for the gig.
Her on-stage performance helped create this aesthetic world too. She radiated a free-spirited energy throughout the set, dancing in a hazy spotlight as if we we were all part of a poignant coming-of-age movie. The venue played a huge part of this as well with the iconic space created an even more stylised setting for Phoebe to invite the crowd into her world.
The new tracks from the forthcoming stood out with their dramatic quality but the highlight had to be the fan favourite closing track 'IDK' which brought the night to an anthemic end filled with crashing cymbals and bubbling synths. It left us fully absorbed in Phoebe's new era and wanting more... we can't wait for her album now.
