Following their debut single ‘J.U.M’ (released earlier this year), Brighton band CARNE’s latest single ‘Vast’ is a compelling track which blends the raw energy of 90s Grunge with a refreshing originality.

Almost immediately, the relentless energy of the song is introduced by explosive drums and a menacing, gritty guitar riff, creating a wall of sound and launching us into its dark atmosphere. Contrasting with this introduction, the verse brings a euphoric twist, with vocalist Carmen Mellino’s melodious voice providing a sense of clarity. This is intensified by the enthralling vocal harmonies that lead into an equally gripping chorus. Throughout the song, both the vocals and the guitar riffs make it evident that the band have a talent for crafting unique and memorable melodies. The song ends as it starts: maintaining the same electric energy, thunderous drums and guitars, and a sense of enormous presence.
To encapsulate the spirit of 90s Alternative music is a challenge that comes with the risk of pastiche; yet CARNE have greatly succeeded at this whilst maintaining their own uniqueness. Perhaps the band’s authenticity stems not only from their musical influences, but also from their engagement with the DIY ethos of the 90s Alternative subculture. This is demonstrated by the band’s interest in zines, including one created by bassist Emia Demir and distributed at gigs earlier this year.
With ‘Vast’, CARNE have solidified their position as an effortlessly cool and promising new band and we highly anticipate their future efforts.
