After waiting over a year to release another original song, the English-Australian songwriter Ruel has graced us with ‘Cats on the Ceiling’, an Indie-Pop sound so catchy and elevating that it feels well worth the wait.
Whilst the song remains consistent with Ruel’s recognisable soulful vocals that featured in ‘Younger’ back in 2018, ‘Cats on the Ceiling’ provides a fresh sound which moves away from mellow breakup anthems and blossoms into feelings reminiscent of a new love.
Ruel’s dreamy melodies and poetic lyrics create images of vibrant sceneries such as "tangerining" skies. This song holds the power to uplift anyone out of a melancholy mood, especially with its trumpet solos and funky bass. The sounds of spinning synths and upbeat drums feel inspired by the likes of Harry Styles.
It’s hard to believe that despite achieving a sound with such a professional and personal quality, Ruel is only 22. We can’t wait to see what he creates next!
