Few bands have evolved as fearlessly as Yard Act. Three albums in, and the Leeds four-piece have pushed the boundaries of post-punk more than ever. Now with their new record ‘You're Gonna Need a Little Music’ (Out July 17th), they take another confident leap forward.

Recorded together as a full band in the studio for the first time, it captures an energy that goes beyond their other records. There is a rawness to these tracks that almost mirrors how intense their live performances can be. It is paired with a confidence in both the way they sing and the way it has been written, suggesting that Yard Act have grown into the band we expected them to be.

Opening track ‘Empty Pledges’ wastes no time establishing the record's tone. James Smith again is focusing on the contradictions of life in this modern age, stating observations that come across as humorous, but that are also extremely relatable. It is immediately obvious that this record is leaning more into rock than anything they have ever previously done.

This heavier edge continues throughout, as ‘Redeemer’ is driven by fierce intensity as its riffs lean more into alternative rock, whilst never losing Yard Act’s identity. ‘Cherephobe Rock’ follows with the fast paced guitars and an infectious momentum that makes it perfect for hearing live. ‘You’re Gonna Need a Little Music’ is extremely varied. Yard Act yet again has not confined themselves to just one sound, as they continue to blur the boundaries with ease.

The strength of this record lies within how naturally they can shift their styles. Rather than sounding like a band experimenting, Yard Act moves confidently between, all whilst maintaining their identity. This album reinforces the already known truth that James Smith is one of the most compelling lyricists of this generation. His writing continues to find humour through everyday observations. Whether it's commenting on consumerism, or the quiet absurdities of ordinary life, his words never feel heavy handed. Instead they invite listeners to create their own conclusions.

‘You’re Gonna Need a Little Music’ creates a feeling that it is no longer necessary to compare Yard Act to anyone else, they have shaped their own image that is incomparable to others. Confident and ambitious, this album confirms Yard Act as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British music.
