‘This Is Not An Exit’, the debut album from transatlantic Indie outfit The Backfires, is a 30 minute, high energy, Indie Rock dream come true. Despite the band being half American, this album feels like the heyday of British 00s guitar bands. These songs are the sound of sweaty gigs in packed venues, with a sound you’d expect from bands like Kaiser Chiefs, Arcade Fire or The Pigeon Detectives.

Opening track ‘Brighter Lights’ sets the tone for the rest of the album - high energy and fast-paced, with smooth chord progressions, a catchy chorus and a well delivered guitar solo. ‘Matador’ brings a shift in tone, with a minor key and a darker sound. It’s an album highlight, and shows some real technical skill. There are some interesting details in a few of the tracks, like a radio sound in the background of ‘Never Seen You Before’, but the guitar is the strongest part of the album and the focal point of the songs, although the bass gets an honourable mention. The eponymous final track is a whirlwind three minutes, building from slow guitar and ballad-like vocals to the characteristic punchy drums and high octane guitar riffs.
If you’ve been looking for something to listen to while you wait for Catfish and the Bottlemen’s fourth album, this is the one for you. Closing track ‘This Is Not An Exit’ is reminiscent of the closing tracks of Catfish’s albums, while ‘Figure It Out’ has a bridge which is as ready for festivals as Catfish’s ‘Pacifier’. This is an album which wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, and you’re sure to find something you like.
With a US tour on the horizon, we’re hoping to see some dates in the North West very soon.
