Only The Poets is a name that’s flying around the industry at the moment, and for all the right reasons. Admired for their £1 gig initiative, the band have been making headlines. Undoubtedly, the long-awaited release of their stunning debut album, ‘And I’d Do It Again’ will lead to the same effect, as the Reading boys take fans on a journey of emotional turmoil. Addressing frontman Tommy Longhurst’s recent heartbreak, the album is a sophisticated masterclass, transforming pain into art.

The title track kicks off the album in incredible style. Whilst only being a minute-long, it acts as a cinematic interlude and captures the atmospheric brilliance of what is to come. Track 2, ‘Monumental’ is titled appropriately, since it arguably showcases the band at their best. The angered tone behind the lyrics creates a truly addictive sound, leaving listeners wanting more. Following songs ‘Emotionally Hungover’ and ‘Thinking Bout Your Ex’ mirror this effect to perfection. The band delivered at creating a compelling story arc, balancing themes of jealousy and pain with admirable expertise.

A stand-out moment in the mix is surely ‘Madeline’. This slower, more intimate song was intricately placed at the centre of the tracklist, and spotlights the band at their most vulnerable. The track’s beautiful sensitivity then transitions into ‘Freeze’, which transforms the stripped-back nature of the previous track into a more upbeat sense of yearning.

The album is wrapped up with ‘Guess She’s Cool’, a track that immaculately summarises the haunting pain of a breakup, and the difficulties of moving on. All in all, it is safe to say that Only The Poets have stunned with their debut, and are definitely ones to watch. ‘And I’d Do It Again’ is a riveting mix of regret, pain and anger expressed through synths, guitars and raw production. Gearing them up for success, this is only the start for them and fans are excited to see what comes next.
