Norwegian Dream-Pop duo Misty Coast have once again entranced listeners with their fifth album ‘Always Sun’, released on April 24th. A whirlwind of synth-induced psychosis, this record traps you in a void of swirling sounds, with harmonies like golden embers, and guitars flickering with sunlight.

We are thrown straight into the psychedelic deep end with no arm bands as the titular track begins. Engulfed in smoky synth waves, Linn Frøkedal's ethereal vocals softly speak, “It’s always sun when you’re dreaming”, as her sedately tranquil tone numbs the nerves, blessing the eardrums with this hazily textured tune.
Each new sound that spawns is full of float, even at the albums most discombobulated. It’s weird but wonderful. Confusing but delicious. Nightmarish in all the right ways. Tracks like ‘Honey and Cinnamon’, and ‘Catch Me If You Can’ encapsulate the feeling of going to bed drunk. The room, dark and spinning, except in this universe, rather than feeling nauseous, you are enlightened, intoxicated by the trippy sound waves that Misty Coast produces.
Perhaps at the album's peak of the strange and beautiful is ‘Humming Bees’. An angry force of distortion buzzes throughout while uncanny harmonies gently creep in. But what contrasts and shines through this are the once joyous in previous tracks, now melancholic tickles of guitar strings. Meanwhile, the prior rattles of distorted rage become soft and comforting. Originally, what seems like an eerie sense of impending doom instead leads us to a surprisingly soothing close to the track.
Despite being titled ‘Always Sun’, its finale track ‘Sway’ proves that the sun does have to go down eventually, ready for darkness to pour in, and the moon to come out. Opening with the signature breathy vocals and a gloomy flute-esque radiance, a solemn symphony soon slithers closer towards us. Undeniable suspense continues to rise, when the flick of a lighter comes into action. Now detonated, full throttle we are thrown back and forth between Misty Coast’s wall of sound.
‘Always sun’ is an incredibly dynamic and experimentally impressive body of work by Misty Coast. Chic in its execution, and composed of chaos, this record is a true standout.
