ALBUM REVIEW: Keo - Put On A Smile For Me
You only need to glance at the cover art for Keo’s debut album ‘Put On A Smile For Me’ to understand what they stand for. It looks like a faded 90s band T-shirt picked up in a vintage sale at a freshers fair, perfectly encapsulating their modern Grunge aesthetic.
As one of the most talked about new guitar bands in the country, with constant comparisons to their Grunge revival peers Wunderhorse, this record manages to live up to the hype while carving out their own sound. The live recording gives vicious anthems ‘That’s Me’ and ‘Fly’ a raw, visceral energy, whereas tracks like ‘Bird On The Wire’ and ‘Spent On You’ provide beautifully hazy restbites before developing into poignant crescendos, bringing some of the album's best moments both lyrically and tonally.
There are times when there feels room for more vocal nuance when they opt for texture over melody in the biggest choruses but the inescapable power of the hits and the beautifully undulating dynamics of the record prevail.
With the release of this album, the inevitable Nirvana posters adorning student walls may be replaced by images of Keo this year as this album captures the new Rock zeitgeist and serves up Grunge-soaked nostalgia for the new generation.
