The debut album ‘my heart keeps score’ from Indie Pop songwriter Harvey Brittain carries an underlying emotive depth that the title suggests. Each song is laced with a poignancy first generated by the lyrics and then amplified by the vocal delivery. However, don’t be mistaken into thinking that this is a stripped record full of heartfelt piano ballads. Instead, the songs soar with a visceral emotion that pours from the vocal calls and dramatic instrumentation.

The opening tracks ‘tangerine’ and ‘obsessed’ capture the tonal balance of the album perfectly, combining the slick, powerful melodies of modern Pop with a textured instrumentation more akin to Indie that gives the tracks more of an energetic drive.

The title track begins more intimately honing focus on Harvey’s emotive lyricism. Yet it begins to build as backing harmonies and synth tones fill out the backdrop before the anthemic chorus kicks in, hitting out with a gut wrenching feeling! This is a certified pop hit that Lewis Capaldi fans would love.

The album continues to blend pop songwriting with layered indie sensibilities from the punchy anthem ‘eyes shut’ or the cinematic outpour of ‘still hurting’. It is these elements of layered instrumentation that really bring the album to life for us. It is a pop album in essence but the tonal variation and energy of the instrumentation makes each song hit you with a poignant power.
