Although still in the early days of his musical trajectory, Chesterfield based singer-songwriter Kai Undrell has already managed to display a wide range of artistic skills to create a sound that is distinctive yet hard to tie down to one style. Today marks the release of his third ,and in our opinion best, single 'Bittersweet Dreams'. The new track doesn't really pack that standout sing-a-long chorus or that unforgettable hook that has often broken smaller artists into the mainstream. Yet, this is why it is so impressive. The fact that it is engaging from start to finish without being reliant distinctive hook or melody to carry the song is a testament to Kai's song writing and vocal ability that is hugely reminiscent of Declan Mckenna's early work.
The vocal flow is loose, which not only allows Kai to fully express the power of his voice when need be, but also prevents the rhythm from stagnating at any point. This is a common theme of his music. Both 'Bittersweet Dreams' and his previous release 'Can of Worms' never linger too long in the same space; always either building or turning direction to a new sound. Although the new single is probably the best introduction to Kai Undrell, it is not until you listen to the two aforementioned and the more introverted acoustic sound of his debut 'Stargazing' that you can appreciate his potential. So get out there and get listening!
