Like some piece of heavy machinery shuddering to life, the track opens with a squeal of feedback followed by two metallic chugs before exploding into its full visceral form. ‘Big Boy’ is the name, and ‘big’ it certainly is. Synths wail like sirens amidst a nuclear meltdown. Guitars clash and ring like a buzzsaw fencing match. And atop all this glorious chaos, frontman Luís Judícibus snarls and yelps his nihilistic manifesto “Man, I’m barely a child…how am I still alive?”.

The whole song thrums with a taut energy, industrial yet hedonistic. Imagine the sounds of a bacchanalian riot in a steelworks factory and you may begin to approach something resembling this majestic racket. It’s impossible to listen to it without breaking a sweat.

The band’s first release since last January’s ‘Best Behaviour’, their third LP, ‘Big Boy’ suggests Them Flying Monkeys are showing no signs of slowing down. If anything, they’re just getting started.
